Am I Human?

What it means to be a robot in the 21st century

What does it mean to be Human? Is it something that we can define? Can we truly explain it without it being abstract? “Am I Human? What it means to be a robot in the 21st century” is a portrait series that deals with the distorted idea of humanity from a robot's point of view.

The captions and descriptions of the photos are references to the Laws of Robotics, Isaac Asimov, and the stories that venture into those worlds. The text that accompanies the portrait is what leads to a robot entering Failure Mode, represented in the series as the glitching of the portrait, and how this would look and feel to them. The activation of the mode is usually caused by a robot having issues following its programming, comprehending abstract ideas, trying to explain irrational behavior, or answering an existential question. If a robot believes its human, can it manage not to enter this mode? Or can it define the idea of what it means to be human?

Humanity is an abstraction.

Humanity is an abstraction.

A robot must know it is a robot.

A robot must know it is a robot.

How do you decide what is injurious, or not injurious, to humanity as a whole?
